MARIE-FRANCE PIRRONE

Like many seniors, Marie-France Pirrone and her husband had been enjoying the benefits of Medicare Parts A and B along with their “TRICARE for Life” coverage, a government-provided supplemental health coverage for both active and retired military. In August of 2006, Marie-France suffered a massive stroke and began to undergo a slow recovery process while living in a skilled nursing facility. Marie-France was nearing the end of her 100-day coverage period from her Part A benefits, and in order for her to remain in the care facility, her husband would have to self-pay expenses of $5,850 per month, which far exceeded his retirement income and was not fully covered by his existing long-term care insurance. Marie-France was fortunate to receive assistance from Ken Richter, her son-in-law and NAHU insurance agent. Through new plan improvements for Medicare 2007, Ken was able to enroll Marie-France in a Medicare Advantage plan without pre-existing conditions and extended her coverage an additional 100 days. He also coordinated TRICARE to supplement the shortages of the $3,200 per month of long-term care benefits.

“Without Ken, my wife and I would have been overwhelmed with out-of-pocket costs,” her husband, retired Commander Anthony Pirrone of the U.S. Navy, said. “We are so relieved he found a way to help us.”

Healthy Access

There is not a single answer to the problems of the uninsured and rising health care costs. A multifaceted approach will be required because the American population is very diverse and no one solution will fit the needs of all of our citizens. However, any attempt to provide Americans with access to health coverage should preserve the private health insurance market. Other countries have experimented with government-run health care systems, and this has resulted in high-cost, lower quality rationed care. Implementation of the initiatives set forth in Healthy Access will result in comprehensive reforms, making health insurance coverage affordable and accessible to everyone without destroying a system that works extremely well for the vast majority of consumers.
